Professor Olubi Sodipo served as the Head of Department of Philosophy between 1971 and 1982. Before his appointment as the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the then Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) he also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, the Chairman of the college of Humanities at the University of Ife. The Department of Philosophy at Ife , under the leadership of Professor Sodipo, became in Black Africa the most exciting Centre for scholarly debates on African Philosophy.

He founded “Second Order” the first International Journal of Philosophy in Black Africa. The solid academic foundation he laid for philosophy at Ife remained solid till today.
